NAMI-CT is the only Connecticut organization affiliated with NAMI, the nation’s leading grassroots family and consumer organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with serious mental illnesses and their families. Founded in 1984 by a group of Connecticut families, NAMI-CT is now the strongest family and consumer organization in the state, serving thousands of people and promoting community health and awareness.

Quick Facts

Need: One fifth of Connecticut children have behavioral health disorders. Many do not receive the care they need because parents and other principal caregivers are overwhelmed with the complexities of their children’s needs and with the number of different systems (mental health, addictions, judicial and educational) that must be negotiated for their children to receive needed diagnostic and treatment services. Poverty, stigma and discrimination further isolate families whose children need services most. Children with behavioral health conditions benefit substantially from active involvement of their most important advocates – their parents. NAMI CT is a founding member of Partnering with Parents, a network of groups offering advocacy training to parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with behavioral health concerns to support them to be able to successfully advocate for what their child needs.

We offer support, education, and advocacy to people living with mental illnesses, their family members, friends, professionals and the public at large.

In addition to our support groups and affiliated chapters, NAMI-CT offers a toll-free Helpline (800) 215-3021 for people living with mental illness, families and professionals; educational programs geared toward those with mental illness – including children – and their families; a bi-monthly member e-newsletter, and a robust public policy program with legislative advocacy training and support.

NAMI-CT is a Connecticut Outreach Partner for the National Institute of Mental Health. As an Outreach Partner, NAMI-CT has access to science-based educational materials as well as information on clinical trials in the area.
